Galpin Auto Sports’ Wide-Bodied Mustang Tops the Customization List at SEMA 2009
GAS makes a statement with one-off 2010 Ford Mustang GT Convertible

LAS VEGAS (November 30, 2009) – Galpin Auto Sports (GAS), the pioneering team behind MTV’s Pimp My Ride television program and a division of the nation’s largest volume Ford dealer, Galpin Ford, has again fired-up the customization world. During the 2009 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas, the team debuted a transformed 2010 Ford Mustang GT Premium Convertible with a GAS hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind wide body kit, a 550hp Ford Racing motor, 20” Forgiato wheels and a handsome two-tone black and pearl-grabber blue paint job.

The car was highlighted as one of AutoWeek’s eight rides they would drive home from Vegas, if they could.

On display in Ford’s SEMA Booth, the modded-Mustang was an instant hit with the customization crowd.

In true Galpin fashion, the customization team turned a true American thrill machine into a rolling piece of art by using innovative designs and first-rate components, from the outside-in. The team took-on the Mustang GT Convertible and boosted the exterior with a distinctive GAS wide body kit, 3dCarbon tonneau cover and PPG Envirobase high performance base coat, topped with custom two-tone black and blue paint with silver accents. The Forgiato 20” aluminum “Mono Leggera Pinzette” wheels and Nitto Invo high-performance tires are corralled by Wilwood front and rear brakes.

The potent Ford power was elevated when GAS dropped in a 550hp Ford Racing super pack and handling pack, paired with a Hurst shifter, JPC one-piece aluminum drive shaft and McCleod aluminum flywheel. Katzkin leather interior, JL Audio speakers and Ford Racing custom backlit door sill plates give this Mustang a “Galpinized” feel.

The car will be on display at GAS’ booth at the LA Auto Show in Kentia Hall, along with a dozen other “Galpinized” vehicles.

I dunno.. I think the widebody look is a "Love it, or hate it" kind of thing. I saw a GAS widebody car at one of the Valley Circle meets. And I have to say... I wasn't feelin it. I love Trans Am racing, and think the look is right on the track. But, not so much on the street.

No doubt a good looking car. For a show car, IDK.

Not my first choice. But, they did do a good job on it.

I guess I'm just to much of a motor head to like the fat look.

A few pics I took at the 2009 SEMA show.

i remember the rear end on that thing. and commenting about how it looked like an eletric shaver.

that rear end is the ugliest thing since the mustang II. It's a big car that they just made bigger. For a SCCA car I dont see a problem, but that thing has to have the same footprint as a Hummer. Not to mention the wide wheels you would need to fill the wheel-wells, thats just more money.

I truly hope no one here has work done by GAS. I personally know how ridiculously high thier profit margins are, and not to mention the hack jobs they've done on my friends many cars

Do you have any pics Tom of the work they did on your friends cars ?

Tommy

no, but to sum up some of the work.............

1) they drilled holes INTO the top of the dash on my friends 2006 S/C Saleen to install a 3 gauge pod and charged $1800! That install could have been done by routing the wiring/lines behind the dash as in the Shelby Super Snakes. Instead the dash had permanent holes drilled, and poor quality drilling at that

2) They installed cat backs on my friends GT500. the mufflers were sitting so far back that the heat warped/melted the rear diffuser. Thier solution was to cut away the melted surfaces

3) on the same GT500...it had to be returned several times to fix rattling after a Bassani x-pipe install

4) same car....loose strut-to-spindle bolts on both sides after Eibach struts/springs install

5) on his Super Duty truck, reverse camera installed to work with factory navi system. It simply didn't work about 90% of the time. Truck went back 3 times til they got it working. Not mention that he had non-replaceable plate frames he bought in Alaska, in the 80's with his deceased mom. They removed it to add the camera plate frame and tossed his away after it requested it not be.

All this was done to one customer who finally said he had enough.

While I was working there I personally witnessed where customers would add G.A.S. items to their new car purchase. G.A.S. sells it at retail to the sales department, making a full profit. The sales department then sells it again to the customer at the time of the purchase....yes, double dipping.

When you as a customer buy custom wheels, they keep your take-offs and tell you that the value of your take-offs are reflected in the cost of the new wheels.... FALSE. They turn around and sell those take offs for a 100% profit. Wholesalers buy those for $250-$300 and sell them for $500+

Well, enough ranting......

They are a business for profit ad thats ok. We do live in a capitalist society, but they have HUGE overhead expenses and need to make as much profit from every deal as they can possibly squeeze out.
